2024 NGAA Advocacy Awards

WINNER: Wyndham Advocacy Strategy

Wyndham City Council

Wyndham’s Advocacy Strategy builds on their previous strategy, strengthening the planning, implementation, coordination and efficiency of advocacy activities to maximise success and deliver better outcomes for the Wyndham Community. It was built in partnership with key stakeholders, taking direct feedback from those who we advocate to, to ask them what they like, don’t like, and would prefer in our advocacy efforts. It also included an independent assessment of five years’ worth of advocacy efforts, with a view of receiving genuine feedback and recommendations in order to better position Wyndham in securing outcomes.

HIGHLY COMMENDED: Penrith City Council’s Advocacy Program

Penrith City Council

Penrith’s Advocacy Program, focuses on the significant projects that Penrith needs to ensure the right infrastructure is delivered to support the community. The Advocacy documents are regularly revised to respond to changing demands and monitor Government investment. They are used to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders, assisting Council to advocate and influence decisions on funding and sequencing of critical infrastructure. Examples include the Castlereagh Connection and Werrington Arterial Stage 2. Achievements include the temporary activation of Penrith Beach, delivery of St Marys Central Park and upgrades to recreational infrastructure.

Environmental Restoration Through Advocacy

City of Gosnells

In collaboration with local governments and landcare groups, the City of Gosnells advocated for funding to restore the health of the Canning and Southern Rivers. The advocacy campaign was successful, attracting a $10 million committment. By leading a solutions-based advocacy campaign to all tiers of government, the City demonstrated what successful best practice looks like, which included working together with local governments and other stakeholder groups. The project was also able to demonstrate how the City, as a growth area council, could be seen as a delivery partner for federal priorities.

Byford Health Hub

Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale

In 2020, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale and the Peel Development Commission developed a business case for a co-located/shared infrastructure and operational health service delivery model; the Byford Health Hub (BHH). BHH is now a $41m State Government election commitment, announced in the 2023/24 budget. The East Metropolitan Health Service is coordinating planning, design, development, and delivery of the Byford Health Hub in partnership with the Shire. The funding means that locals will no longer have to travel long distances to receive specialist care.

Wollondilly Wellbeing Report

Wollondilly Shire Council

The Wollondilly Wellbeing Report discusses the health needs of our community and the action we are taking to meet them. It is a snapshot with the population of Wollondilly set to increase, it is vital to understand the community’s needs and what actions need to be undertaken to promote the overall health and wellbeing of Wollondilly’s people. The work seeks to elevate health in planning which is not yet recognised effectively in the NSW planning system. However, planning and built environments have huge impacts on our health both positive and negative.
